Is she off on her estimate? By how far? What is your estimate?

Using a beach wedding as an example, here are some things to factor in. Just getting the guests down to the beach will take time. Guests don't all arrive at the same time and, even if they are shuttled in, greeting old friends and family members, taking a comfort break, and moving from the arrival area to the ceremony area, usually down a long narrow beach access way, takes time. Is having your guests pushed, herded and made to feel hurried part of your wedding plan? Don't you want them to experience the beauty and charm of the venue you have chosen. Isn't this the reason you are having your ceremony outdoors in the first place?

Do you want your wedding remembered as a frenzied Olympic sprint? The answer is, of course not! Maintaining a strict time line on an outdoor wedding is nearly impossible, even for experienced consultants. There are just too many variables. Wedding ceremonies are a human endeavor and things happen or don't happen, especially on time. This is where your ceremony orchestra can be of great help. Music can fill in any delays and time miscues and make the ceremony seem flawless.

So what is the best approach? Have a good time plan but build in flexibility. Work with experienced vendors and take their advice and assistance. Your vendors will try their best to make your dreams come true, but give them enough time to get it done right.

Have realistic expectations and don't obsess over every detail. Plan your music so that your choices please you but also entertain your guests during any ceremony timing missteps. This means to have some music selections that are familiar to your guests.

Lastly, remember why you are doing this. Partying at the reception is great but what is said and done during the ceremony is what binds you for life, so give the ceremony the time it deserves and enjoy a more relaxed, less stressful pace.

P.S. the Perdido Key wedding will take at least 60 to 75 minutes with a reasonably managed time line. 5/29/07
